簡介Introduction

在本活動中,你會利用提供的材料來製作一個細胞膜模型。你需要應用關於細胞膜結構的知識。你還有機會展示你在工程學上的技能、創意、團隊合作性和溝通技巧。

In this activity, you will use materials provided to make a cell membrane model. During the activity you will need to apply your knowledge about the structure of cell membrane. You will also have a chance to demonstrate your engineering skills, creativity, team work and communication skills.

  • 細胞膜的結構能以流動鑲嵌模型來描述(圖1)。
  • 細胞膜由磷脂雙層組成,並有蛋白分子散佈在其中。
  • 「流動鑲嵌模型」這名字的由來是基於細胞膜的磷脂雙層具流動性,磷脂分子與一些蛋白質分子可作橫向移動。

Study the content below to revise the structure, properties and functions of the cell membrane.
  • The structure of the cell membrane can be described by the fluid mosaic model (Figure 1).
  • The cell membrane is made up of a bilayer of phospholipid molecules with protein molecules interspersed among them.
  • The cell membrane is ‘fluid’ in nature. The phospholipid molecules and some protein molecules can move laterally within the bilayer.
  • Due to the fluid nature of the membrane, proteins are found to intersperse within the bilayer distributed in a mosaic pattern.

  • A phospholipid molecule can be represented as a hydrophilic ‘head’ with two hydrophobic ‘tails’.
  • The hydrophobic tails are pointing inwards, while the hydrophilic heads face the watery environment inside and outside the cell.
  • Membrane proteins serve many different functions as shown in the table below.

  • The cell membrane is strong enough to hold the cell contents. The cell membrane can break and fuse due to its fluidity. This allows cells to change shape during cell growth, cell division and phagocytosis.
  • The cell membrane is differentially permeable. This allows the control of the movement of substances into and out of the cell.

活動Task
老師會把同學分成三至五人的小組。與組員合作設計和製作一個細胞膜模型。設計細胞膜模型時,要注意以下各項︰ Your teacher will divide the class into groups of three to five. Collaborate with your group members to design and make a cell membrane model. Remember that the model:
